Antacids Causing Food AllergiesCommonly used anti-acid drugs increase the risk of food allergiesResearch from the Medical University of Vienna has shown that patients treated with antacids for heartburn and other GI problems can increase a person's risks of developing new food allergies. ![]() The study was done with 152 patients treated with one of the following medications for a three month period of time:
Bloods tests for IgE food allergies were taken before treatement, three month into treatment and five month after the program. Ten percent of the treated group produced more antibodies to foods which they were already allergic (food allergies got worse). Fifteen percent produced antibodies to foods they have never had an allergy to before the study (new allergies). Six percent of patient had a higher allergic profile five months after the program was over. The common foods that showed allergy during the study were peanuts, walnuts, almonds, potatoes, tomatoes, celery, carrots, oranges, wheat flour and rye flour.
