The FDA warned of "serious and potentially life-threatening side effects" in a recent ruling.  Besides, there is little evidence these oral drugs ease cold symptoms in children so young.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also reported last year that more than 1,500 babies and toddlers wound up in emergency rooms over a 2-year period because of the drugs.

Remedies that work for adults do not necessarily work for children.  So, doctors are returning to old-fashioned measures, such as plenty of rest and fluids, saline drops to open stuffy noses, and the use of humidifiers while children are sleeping.

Scientists advising the FDA have also indicated the medicines aren't recommended for children under 6, and an investigation is ongoing to consider whether over-the-counter cold remedies are safe and effective for children under 12.
