Six things you need to know to start that step to the right are: *Set realistic weight release goals. A lot of this in the math: calories in and calories out. 3500 calories equals one pound. And, shedding one to two pounds a week is realistic if you are monitoring your food intake and exercising regularly. To lose one pound per week you need to burn an extra 500 calories or eat 500 calories less (or a combination of the two). And don't forget to make sure your nutritional needs are met while doing this. The bad news is change happens slowly. However, that's also the good news too. You don't gain 5 pounds by eating a hot fudge sundae, and you don't lose 5 pounds by walking on the treadmill for an hour. One hot fudge sundae does not make a disaster and one hour on the treadmill does not make up for hot fudge sundae! Learn how to read labels on food packages and become familiar with what to stay away from and what to watch out for when purchasing packaged food. A few good examples:
Portion control is key to understanding how many calories you are consuming. Start by reading the package and determining how many servings you are eating. Most people underestimate the number of calories they eat and overestimate the number of calories they burn. The first step in the process is wrapping you arms around portion size. Weighing and measuring food is a must until you have a good feel for what you are consuming. Movement does a body good! Don't worry about what kind, how often or when - just move it, move it, move it! Get the blood flowing and revitalize! You will feel fabulous with even just a short walk. If you don't have 30 minutes for a walk take 3 ten-minute walks throughout the day. The important point is to get off the couch and move. Don't skip meals thinking you are saving calories for binges later in the day or week. And, don't restrict calories too much. Either way, you are not honoring your body's need for fuel on a regular basis. Think of it as gasoline for your car; it can only use so much at a time regardless how much is in the tank. And, depriving the car of gas doesn't help you get to your destination any quicker or better. Actually, most times it will prevent or delay you from getting there. Main Point: Just start by making small changes! You don't need a drastic, complicated overhaul. Stop waiting for the perfect time to do it all and get started now by taking small steps in the right direction!
Take Away: Don't underestimate the power of small changes as you begin your healthy lifestyle journey. Small changes pave the way for success! You know the saying "inch by inch, it's a cinch!"
Homework: Make the decision to start by taking a first step! Really commit to making some small change. Start with realistic expectations, get educated about what you are trying to do, monitor your current habits and movements, and making wise choices.
